I just received an SMS from a friend in OZ. He states that he has been concerned about me / my family for a while, and wanted to hear if all was well. I quickly sent back a response to say we will chat a bit later. And I will give him a call.
However, it got me thinking about all the technology we have available, and how, here in South Africa, we can't always implement it due to the high cost of some of the services.
It's sad to think that I could have a high speed line / connection into the Internet, with video, which would afford me the option of regularly calling friends in far away places, and chatting. And with the video function we could see each other, see the families, etc. I know that a phone call is just as good, almost, but that's not the point.
Why should we opt to be a third world country when it comes to some issues, and then opt to compare ourselves to first world countries when it suits us? We want to be treated as an emerging market, but then want to dictate to the UN / World bank / G8 of what they should do, how they should do it.....
For the past few years we have been talking about the SNO - second network operator - competitor to Telkom - and after much wasted time the license was awarded. So what? Nada / nothing / niente / niks. We have seen nothing coming out of it. No promotions, no offers, and during a radio interview, the big guy in the SNO said they don't propose to compete on pricing, but rather on the bouquet of offerings....! What the fuck is that?
All he's saying is, we'll make as much money as we can, and throw in some probably useless functions which we know that 99.99% of the clients probably won't want/ need / use and it will make us look like we are offering more for less. DUH!! We might be a first third world country, but most / many of us have first world education (thanx to the apartheid regime) and we know crap when we see it.
SO, to my friend in OZ, thanx for the thoughts, don't worry we are all ok, I will be calling you as soon as time / meetings allow, and please send my love to all the family there.
Great to know our friends are thinking about us, no matter where we / they are in the world.
Salagatle!
