And so It's municipal / local election time again in sunny souf efrika! And as usual all the crap is up on posters hanging on all the street lamps. The "official opposition" as they call themselves, the DA party have based their entire politicking on slating the current incumbents, mostly the ANC at present. It's all about better finances, better service delivery, less corruption, less crime, blah, blah, blah!
The ANC on the other hand, have spent a lot of money on posters in the other official languages. Obviously they are placing their bets on the Non-white majority. Unfortunately my priveledged upbringing didn't include learning any of the other 10 official languages, so I am not in the position to elaborate on their strategy, suffice to say that there is some serious own back patting with regards what they claim to have achieved in the past 10 yrs. Or so they say!?!?!
Alas, methinks they are going to win again anyway. I don't think the voting majority have reached the point of maturity yet where they vote with their heads instead of their hearts. To them it's a matter of "Rather a corrupt, non-delivering" ANC led council, than a white led council. And so the rot continues.
Here where I live our esteemed mayor decided he'd like to have one of the baby grand pianos in his house, and so had one uplifted from one of the smaller ballrooms at the town hall, and delivered to his private residence. Not sure how it was done, but I'm willing to bet it was loaded onto the back of a 8 ton truck by labourers, and unloaded the same way. Who cares if it's out of tune now, now one plays it anyway,or if it could have got damaged, they would have just put it right back and no one would have known how the damage had occurred. Picture it"
"Eeee, Sipho, why eees thet pianoo standing sow skeeeu? It seems thet wan off her legs she ees broken?"
"Eee! Oh, eye donno! Eye em shure eet was laik dat when we took over from the previous regime. Anyway comrade, eet ees not a cultural piece of musical instruument, so eet don't metter. We can hef eet moved out to the storroom. Ok?"
Another fast one he has pulled on us is closing down the town / city stadium. This is the venue which was used by all the schools for their annual athletics meet, by the local squash club, gymnastics, karate clubs, and the cycling club as it had a proper cycling track!
But no more. His lordship the, flat nosed arse, has decided that he is going to lease / sell it to Kaiser Chiefs, a big, popular local soccer team.
They will rip the place apart, and refit it to the tune of many millions of rands as a soccer stadium.
Fnuck knows where they will find parking for the masses expected to attend the matches. And don't worry that its common place for the spectators to riot and destroy the stadium, and private property outside if the game doesn't go their way. No problem sez he, we'll insure an increased police presence if required.
HEHE, this in a town where when you call the cops to come out, the usual response is "We don't have enough vehicles", or, "We will come as soon as possible" (translated this means you'll be lucky if you ever see us!!)
Anyway, luckily we don't live to near to the future scenes of violent hooliganism!!
But it could cost us!
Seems like the affected parties are too apathetic to fight this decision either. Not sure what the legalities are, but I'm sure that something could / should be done!

Ehhhh - the peeano - I em sure only the whyte keys wehk coz the bleck wahns nevva wehk!
Ridiculous. People starving in the streets, and they waste money on that.
As for the...er...achievements in the last ten years, let's reflect:
- 1 in 3 people HIV positive: entire health system at risk of collapse due to burden of AIDS-related illness. Health minister curing AIDS with Beetroot and claiming aliens are manipulating other governments (would explain Dubya’s warmongering but I’d rather not go there…)
- Cape Town & Johannesburg vying for first & second place as "Murder Capital of the World" along with places like Caracas and Lagos
- White females have a one in two chance of being raped - for me with a wife and two daughters, statistically our family stands a good chance of having to go through that.
- Basic infrastructure breaking down: not enough police vehicles to respond to rampant crime, fire trucks without fuel, etc.
- Crime levels so bad the government place a moratorium on the publishing of crime statistics (let's hear it for a free press) because they know that if the people knew what was going on, they would probably revolt
- Residents living behind 8' walls with electric fencing, rabid dogs, burglar bars, armed response contracted companies monitoring home security systems
- Driving a BMW or Mercedes is taking your life into your own hands, making you a carjacking target
- 6-month old and younger babies being raped by men in the belief that it will cure them of HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases
- 2% of the working population pay tax – the rest are either shirking this responsibility or are not earning income
- Government clamping down on Gun licenses like crazy – yet for $40 you can rent an AK-47 Assault rifle from your nearest convenience shack in a township. Heck, they’ll even throw in the first 40-round Magazine free if you take it for two Bank robberies or more. How many banks are robbed with a licensed firearm in South Africa? Wake up guys....
- Corruption going all the way to the top, the Deputy President (now ex) up for bribery and rape, the former no doubt as a scapegoat to stop the investigation being taken one rung higher to the State President.
- Exactly what is happening to this Blog owner: Skilled people who are top performers are sidelined to make room for incompetents based on skin colour – calling it “Affirmative Action” to redress “Past Incongruities” means the few skilled people holding the economy together will get the shits and leave.
The previously disenfranchised masses are slowly coming to the conclusion that with D-E-M-O-C-R-A-C-Y comes R-E-S-P-O-N-S-I-B-I-L-I-T-Y. They were promised heaven and earth pre 1994 elections, expecting all the wealth to somehow be siphoned off the whities and given to them. You have equal rights now, which includes the right to pay for your electricity and water just like the oppressive whities.
In summary, South Africa had the "Haves" and the "Have Nots". Now the "Haves" are either "Have mores" or are "Have left" (me) and the "Have Nots" are "Have less" – it’ll just take them a while to figure out they’ve been hoodwinked. Perhaps another “African Election” is pending.
Congratulations, Mbeki. Time to dust off the fiddle, Rome is smoldering.
Written from my home office in Brisbane where I can go for a walk in the streets or along the beachfront with my wife after sunset without my Glock 9mm.
Thanks for the vent.
Thanx Pete. Good vent, and mostly true. Sadly. Glad u and the family are well. Enjoy that walk bro, everyday. There are those of us who never will. Sadly.
Wow...for someone who doesn't live here anymore, he still knows his stuff, doesn't he?
Pete, time to come back and run for President. You obviously have a better grip on things than our "eelustrous leedah".
