And the coasters are up

Some time ago I published photos of my coaster collection which I had sorted, and put onto backing boards, and had glass cut for, and had only to make the frames for before I could hang them. Making frames is not the easiest thing, and I have had several failed attempts. Last week I managed to get my hands on some really fine frames, and so moved the coasters into these, and got them hung, all over the past weekend.

So, as can be seen from the above, it's a really awesome bar - a massive conversation piece. needs to be sorted a bit, maybe toned down, I don't know. Still have to finish framing the coasters and get them up on display. Oh, and I am looking for a "box light", one that says "castle" or "Lion" or any bar related theme. Like those that used to be outside bottle stores and pubs.

And I have to finish sorting the stuff for the bar counter display cabinet. And then there's the wine collection that needs to sorted, and, well better stored.... geezzzz, and you all think this is fun?

Dive Dad and Fishman, the Princess sez we need to get you guys (with spouses and kids) around here before DMD moves to slaap stad! What u 2 think?

Update on the bar

Well, quite a productive weekend it was, well, Saturday was anyway. I got the glass for the shelving for the bar counter display on Friday on the way home, and commenced with the cutting to shape. No problem either, till I dropped on of the smaller glass sections, already cut and in place, onto another piece, also already cut. And both shattered. So I went down to the local glass place, where I bought two replacement panes, and paid through my nose in comparison to the prices at Builders Warehouse.

Anyway, it was a matter of distance. Back home, I got these cut and in place. 10 Sections, done! So, while showing my work off to the Princess, and she's chatting to me, I lift another corner piece to take it out so I can clean it, and drop it and it breaks. Send the Princess off to get another piece while I use the hot glue gun to fix the rest into place before I break anymore!! After she got back, I did the last piece, again, and glued it in. Job done. Now, the frame of the counter was not built to rigid specifications, and what should have been standard 60 deg. corners are not quite that. Which means the the cutting of the angles in the panes wasn't an exact science, and there was always going to be some gaps in between the panes.

Not a problem though. I have a nice collection of bar towels, brought back from the UK )amongst other places) by traveling friends, and have used these quite well to a) put them on display, b) cover up the "iffy" fit of the glass panes.

The front openings will be closed up with glass panels, probably 10 or 12 mm thick. I will however have to get a professional in to do that as a) The openings are not symmetrical, and b) 10/12 mm glass is not that easy to cut to shape. So I'll get the pro's in to cut / make the panels up on site, and fit them. Some things are just better left to the pro's!

While I was "playing" with the bar counter inside, I had a "freelance" worker, Alfred, who has done some work for me before, painting the boundary wall, followed by the garage retaining wall.
It was in a really bad way, and needed the fresh coat. The white is a universal undercoat. Haven't had a discussion with the Princess yet on her preferred choice of final color.

And while Alfred was painting the garden wall, Witness, that old faithful employee, was busy resealing the deck. This is a once a year operation, always at the end of winter, before the rains. Next week he will do the upstairs balcony, and then It's all done for another year.

Glass cutting and stuff

So, based on the need to have the glass shelving cut for my bar counter, and due to the fact that it's not an exact build (ie. 60deg corners are not quite 60deg), I thought maybe I should buy the glass in the right width, and length, and then cut the corners myself. hey, it's not that hard, have you ever watched them cutting 4 mm glass panes?

So I stop in a Builders Warehouse, buy a piece of 297mm x 500 mm glass, ZAR 18.50, and a glass cutter (ZAR 20) and take myself off home. The new glass cutter is similar in shape to my old one (not sure if I will find it in my workshop) but instead of a diamond tipped wheel, it has a diamond tip inserted. It doesn't work! It's a piece of crap. In fact I tried to cut the pane 4 times, and it never broke off straight. So, it took me about 30 seconds to find the old cutter, and every cut was perfect!
Therefore, today I'm off to Builders Warehouse to return the defective cutter for a refund, and to buy the glass for the shelving, in rectangles, so I can cut to size / fit myself.

Which raises another point. Apart from some electrical tools, depending on the make you buy / prefer, tools today are mostly crap. Take this glass cutter. It was the only type that this outlet stocks. Probably made in China, and of dubious quality. Oh, and it does not do the job. Might have worked for 2 - 3 mm glass, but I don't think so. Why is it that a good design will be dropped for a cheaper inferior model? it's not like it can be that much cheaper. It's like saying the Chana bakkies coming out of China are bette than a Toyota / Ford / Mitsubishi bakkie!

Hey, it's a damn sight cheaper, but no way can it replace any of the models above. But in this case the other models have been kept available, unlike the glass cutters which the buyers have gone for the cheapest available! Makes no sense, other than they probably plan for a market place of "unprofessional" DIY types. Then that don't really know better, and think the problem lies with their lack of skill rather than the inferior tool.

So, this weekend is glass cutting weekend. If all goes well, the bar co8unter should be at 99% complete. Then all that remains is the glass fronts to prevent fidgeting with the items on display by the bar visitors, and maybe a foot rest.....

Then it's the RS250 rebuild! Boy, that project is a year old already! I'm considering getting a running 2nd hand motor to put into it rather than getting this one repaired. Probably cost about the same, without having to worry about some missing parts, in the event I didn't get all of them. The previous owner had stripped the motor, and I'm not sure all the stuff was in the box when I collected it! Also, I'm not doing a respray now, cost is a factor. i just want to get it up and running. Rresprays and the like can always be done later when funds are available.

Apart from all of the above, I'll be starting to make the picture frames for all amy coasters. (see my pic of the mitre saw I purchased a few weeks ago). My first attempt at a corner of frame is great. This will be a doddle!



















The frame profile is available pre made at Builders Warehouse, at about ZAR 60 / 2 meter length. I have the mitre saw, the wood glue, staple gun, and time. Just need to make a clamping jig, for which I downloaded a plan from the internet! This I will make in a jiffy on Saturday morning, and then I can make a frame a night between supper and the news.....!

because LuckyL was away on your, and GMan wasn't around (where the hell was he?) I tried to move the partly completed bar counter on my own, with serious consequences.
Damn thing broke in two places!!!
So I had to redo the first of the broken joints, and will do the second one this coming weekend.
What a pity. But, I have learned a thing or two, and maybe it just means I will have a better product at the end of it.

This morning I went back to Builders Warehouse, and bought 10 more frames sets (see my previous coaster blog!

More on the coasters

So, as per my previous post, I decided to make my own frames. Contrary to what Fishman advised, I am not making frames as we commonly know them.

Anyway, went to Builders Warehouse, got 5 masonite backing boards, and 5 pieces of glass (3mm) cut to size. (550mm x 450mm). Cost about ZAR100 for all 5!!!

Back home GMan cleaned the glass for me whilst I sorted and Presticked the coasters in place.

Here is the result. However, I will need to make another 15 of these just to accommodate the coasters I have! I don't have the glass on the front yet. This will go on when I "hang" the displays. More detail to follow.

I don't think I will collect anymore. Maybe start concentrating on only beer ones, and slowly phase the others out....
