Hearts and roses and kisses galore......
What the hell is all that shit for?

I found a second email address - same result
The third one I found and tried is that of his secretary. It hasn't come back. Let's wait and see....

I have now written to the President of South Africa - Mr. Thabo Mbeki. Got his email address off his personal website.
Here is the content of my mail:-


Mr. President,
I greet you as a citizen of South Africa, and an African.
I am attaching here a document I have prepared, and used several times over the past 24 months, in various updated forms, to try and assist a fellow South African with his Identity Document and Social grant dilemma.
I know and understand that this issue is not directly your responsibility, but also know that you take such issues to heart. I know that those persons who are responsible report, ultimately, to your office, to you.
What I humbly request, is that someone in your office be directed to take up this issue, and see that it is resolved as quickly as possible. I am willing to put myself at the disposal of whomever is tasked to make things happen.
When I told the subject of this problem that I would be writing you for assistance, his reply was "Are you not afraid?". and after smiling, loudly, I attempted to make him understand that no one is to be feared, and that those in office are there because of us, and for us. It is always interesting, sometimes funny, to hear, and appreciate how the "older" generation think.
I trust that between us, me and your office, we can find a resolution to this problem, and we can restore to an old man his pride, and dignity.
May you, our beautiful country and it's people be blessed with peace, wisdom, and prosperity for all.

And to this I attached the now well worn document referring to all of the things we have done in an attempt to resolve this issue.
Hope to get a response, any response.

Update on Bok van Blerk

Apart from some discussions in Parliament (apparently) about our friend Bok, and his song "De La Rey", there was a "concert" held at a local shopping center this past weekend. He was the entertainer of the day.

He was also the cause of the traffic problems they had on the day. I seems 15000 people turned up.....

Friends / SNO / technology / first third world

I just received an SMS from a friend in OZ. He states that he has been concerned about me / my family for a while, and wanted to hear if all was well. I quickly sent back a response to say we will chat a bit later. And I will give him a call.

However, it got me thinking about all the technology we have available, and how, here in South Africa, we can't always implement it due to the high cost of some of the services.

It's sad to think that I could have a high speed line / connection into the Internet, with video, which would afford me the option of regularly calling friends in far away places, and chatting. And with the video function we could see each other, see the families, etc. I know that a phone call is just as good, almost, but that's not the point.

Why should we opt to be a third world country when it comes to some issues, and then opt to compare ourselves to first world countries when it suits us? We want to be treated as an emerging market, but then want to dictate to the UN / World bank / G8 of what they should do, how they should do it.....

For the past few years we have been talking about the SNO - second network operator - competitor to Telkom - and after much wasted time the license was awarded. So what? Nada / nothing / niente / niks. We have seen nothing coming out of it. No promotions, no offers, and during a radio interview, the big guy in the SNO said they don't propose to compete on pricing, but rather on the bouquet of offerings....! What the fuck is that?
All he's saying is, we'll make as much money as we can, and throw in some probably useless functions which we know that 99.99% of the clients probably won't want/ need / use and it will make us look like we are offering more for less. DUH!! We might be a first third world country, but most / many of us have first world education (thanx to the apartheid regime) and we know crap when we see it.

SO, to my friend in OZ, thanx for the thoughts, don't worry we are all ok, I will be calling you as soon as time / meetings allow, and please send my love to all the family there.
Great to know our friends are thinking about us, no matter where we / they are in the world.

The weekend came and went....

Had my brother, his wife, and my niece visiting over the weekend. They flew up for his birthday which was on Saturday.
Once again, such a pleasure having them stay over. He's just great...
