So you think that you can fire me
Or even just make me go
Well I got news for you
There's nothing I don't know
I know about the caucus
And decisions made by you
I know that we're in trouble
And you don't know what to do
Management blame the salesmen
But where's their input here?
They hide behind the process
They manage us by fear!
I've been around the block you know
Retrenchment's nothing new
I also know the process
Man, I'm going to put the screws on you
I hope you’ve got your facts right
Cause I know that I have mine
And if this comes down to evidence
Your arse is fried, slave, not mine

Process, procedures and screwing you over....
So it would seem that following process and procedures far outweighs morals in this company. I was recently hauled over the coals because of a contract I signed with a client. He "backdated" his acceptance (for reasons unknown) and because the pricing approval was dated after the contract, it was deemed a violation of process! And I was not afforded the option of getting the client to resign the contract. No way... I had been a bad boy and they were going to get me!!!
Now, another client signed an agreement with a start date of Feb 01, but only did so on March 16 (about). I was asked to make a written statement about whether any services had been delivered to the client for Feb, beginning March. I saw the catch straight away. If I had said that the client was "covered" during this period, pending final agreement and signature that would have been my job!! BUT, they have no moral concerns about billing the client for Feb, even though NO SERVICES had been delivered to the client for that period!
And now finally, another client will be renewing their agreement this week coming. Current contract expires 31 March - yesterday. I made sure that I let the client know, in writing, that he would be exposed if nothing was in place on time. (I am willing to put my house on it that if the client does invoke a disaster between now and the final signature date, this company WILL assist them. They can't afford not to, because the client will be helped by someone else, and we will lose their business!!!)
I was also informed that if I did not bring the signed document in to the office for acceptance by my management by midnight 31 March, the recognition for my targets would only be reflected in the second quarter’s stats. This means waiting a further 30-60 days for my commissions!
Once again, when the contract is finally signed next week some time, they will have no problem in billing the client from 01 April, even though "They will have had no cover available".
So the client is exposed, the salesman is screwed, but the company will get their money.
Something stinks, and it's not me this time.

Day 2 in the hospital
I only got to the Princess at about 11am. Had a busy morning, what with having to sort out the kids and all. Gman has gone on a weekend "survivor camp" with the church youth. LuckyL was with me. Queen went home...
So the Princess was looking much better. Still in pain, but not unbearably so. Said she hadn't used the morphine pump much the night before as she felt it was making her dizzy (side effect is lowering of blood pressure)!
Anyway, they had taken the drips out, and the spinal block needle and pipes and the catheter. So she was much happier. The drain in the wound was still in place though.
She had some other visitors earlier in the day, and was also now being fed ice-cream, jelly and custard at meal times.
Her sister arrived at about 12ish, so we left.
Took LuckyL home, and then went off to do work related stuff. Turns out to be a waste of time, but more on this later.
Back at the hospital by 5pm. Princess still looking good. However, because the catheter is out, she now needs to get to the toilet, but is unable to stand yet. First time she tried, with the assistance of the nursing staff she almost blacked out. But she's going to have to get there. I told her to tell them she wants a wheelchair if she can’t walk.
Left her at about 6.15pm.
Went to collect LuckyL who had spent the afternoon with friends, and then home.
Been a long, slow, wasted day....

There's a smell......
There's a smell around
Can’t seem to place it,
Must be common though
I've smelt it before
It's almost medicinal
But also so natural
I'm sure that it's normal
But I can't be sure
I got on the sniff
And try track it down
It's coming from round here
It's stronger down there
I'm finding the source now
It's inside my pants
Oh, Dimmit I farted
So glad I never shat!

Forms, needles, more forms....Part 2
12.55 Pop out for another quick smoke. Matron says the doctor has just finished his last op for the day, and will make his rounds soon. If he doesn’t go for lunch first. So I make it a quick one, and get back by 1.05.
The last patient just got back. That’s all four in the ward done. (One was still here from yesterday). Clouds have started to fill in outside, and it's not so sunny anymore, but still pleasant.
Princess is nodding off all the time. Nurse just came to check her blood pressure and pulse again. Every hour now, for today at least I think.
I'll wait for the doctor to come by, and try to remember all he says so that I can make a note so as to share with the Princess when she's more aware. After that I'll go home. Need to sort out the kids and stuff, and then get back here this evening. Sure they will want to visit as well.
She got her first bunch of flowers just now. A nice bouquet from the Anglican Church we attended when we still lived in our previous home. We still keep in touch with the pastor / priest (it's a she). Nice.
I haven't got her any. Figured I'll get some when she's home, and all the rest have died off. Hope I figure right or else I could be in the dog box for a while......
1.30... Power is down to 12%.. better shut down for now.
1.45... found a wall plug in the waiting area. Nurses are fitting some fancy calf massage things to the Princess. Apparently, because she’s had this epidural / spinal block thing, and they are keeping it going, they need to stimulate the blood flow through the legs, or else there is the threat of blood clots! And as she's numb from the waist down, she can't even feel her toes, let alone move them!
So now the Princess is in vibrate mode!
(I'm sure all the people walking past think I'm busy doing work...he he, I don't even do any at the office, why would I start now!)
Was just approached by a Matron who asked me if I had relocated my office to this waiting area! I said I had wanted to but there was a problem with the network connectivity!! He he. And then she offered me some tea! No thanx, I'm a coffee guy, and had too many cups already! Good service!
Power is up to 33%, and the doctor hasn't come round yet.
By the time I get through this I will have typed a book! Wonder if anyone is going to bother reading such lengthy bloggs! (Apart from Jenny that is :-))
I went home at about 3.00pm. Picked up LuckyL at the sports club where he had played in a hockey match against a touring Malawian school team. Off home and got him and Gman to shower and get dressed to visit the Princess. Queen came with too.
I got back to the hospital at about 5.45. The doctor had been, 30 minutes after I had left! How’s that for crappy luck? Anyway, seems he was quite happy with the op, but apart from everything else he also had to remove half of the left ovary (the right one went as well). Problem with removing ovaries is once they all gone, the women have to start taking hormone replacement tablets, and the Princess does not want to do that!
Anyway, she was looking good. She’s resting. No pain, yet! The matron came around again, gave her the “before I leave” talk (she knocks off at about 7pm), and warned her that once the drugs start to wear off she will need to be strong as she will be in much pain. She does have the morphine pump though, and will use it!
Sister-in-law turned up at about 6.15 so we left. You can’t have too many visitors around at one time. Anyway, I had to drop Gman off at a friend high school where they were having an International Evening. (They have multiple food stalls each representing a different country – fund raising exercise).
Got home to a precooked supper, (done in a slow cooker) and now it’s relax in front of the TV time.
More later.

Forms, needles, more forms....
Thursday, 30 March 2006 Up at 4.45 am to get ready to take the Princess to the hospital. We both slept quite well, surprisingly. We also had the queen sleep over so that she could get the kids to school this morning. It's their last day of school for this quarter, so exciting for them.
Hospital is a short drive from home, and we are there by 5.50, and no queuing required. Even though we had filled in some forms at home beforehand which had been faxed to us, there is still a mountain of forms to be filled! It's madness. And the same information 2 - 3 times on different forms!! I'm sure there is an opportunity here for a computerized consolidation of all this paperwork!
Anyway, we go through to the ward which she is sharing with 3 other ladies. Nurse comes in, and yes, you guessed right, more forms. Anyway, there's blood pressure tests, temperature checks, and all that stuff.
Twice I get kicked out because of "private" stuff. Private stuff included an enema! Which the Princess says had an immediate effect! Meaning she went immediately to deliver on the effect! Followed by a suppository for an antibiotic? She then commented to the nurse " Are we done here? Is there anything else you want to put up my bum?" to which the nurse responded "no, that's it, just the paper work left!"
When I was told this I nearly fell out of my chair. I could picture the nurse trying to "fit" the paper work where no paperwork had gone before!!!
Princess is scared. Very! Then the anethesist arrives, gives her the whole talk, asks the sane questions the receptionist and the nurse asked......Then it's showtime. This lady is dead scared of needles. And he's got to put in a drip. Man, she almost breaks off 3 of my fingers squeezing my hand so hard. But it's a relatively painless experience, and the doctor is obviously very proficient! Just as well, else I might have had to have my hand amputated!!
He tells her about the spinal block / epidural he's going to give her to see her through the first 12 hours after the operation. And he's giving her a morphine pump! Geez, this is serious shit! Well, everything seems to be arranged properly! Then he injects some Dormican relaxant into the drip and "HEY!!! WOW THIS IS COOL!!!" The Princess is tripping!!! Eyes get droopy within 30 seconds and she sez it feels like she's had like 20 tequila's. Now for the famous tequila Queen this is not something new, and she would know the feeling!! Probably a good thing as now she's calmer and sedated. Just doesn't want to nod off.....
I pop out for a quick smoke, and a cup of black coffee, pick up a newspaper and get my laptop, and get back to her bedside asap. So, here I am typing this. Another nurse / matron / hospital employee has just come with more papers. Well, one more. Signed, now bugger off already!
Spent the next hour sitting next to her bed reading the newspaper. She slept on and off. The last 15 minutes before they fetched her she said she was now wide awake. Makes you wonder why they gave her the drugs so soon.
9.20 am. The porter and nurse have just come to fetch her. I walk with them to the doors of the theater, that's as far as I can go, give her another kiss, tell he I love her, and say "Good luck". What else can you say?
Then I walk down to the doctors rooms to make the "prepayment"! Those of you who read some of my previous posts will recall the doctor wanted us to prepay. So now I have. 5 Minutes before he does the job. They didn't specify how long before today they wanted the payment!
I'm sitting at the coffee room, having coffee, a toasted sandwich (mushrooms, cheddar cheese, motzarella cheese) and a smoke. Sandwich was good, came with chips... Coffee is coffee. Smoke becomes two, then three...
Going to be about an hour and a half wait.... Weathers great for a change. Suns out, some cloud around. Will probably rain again later. Usual Highveld afternoon stuff.
9.30... sitting inside now, in a small area next to the passage, waiting. It's been an hour, so she could come out anytime.... Hope it's soon. In fact I think I'll take a walk down to the theater entrance and see if I can catch them bringing her out.
10.05... She's still not out. Have walked back to the waiting area near her room. Man this is taking long. However, I see the lady who went in before her is now back, so maybe it does take a bit longer than we thought. Also, it depends on how long they keep her in the transfer room. That's the place between the theater and your room where they keep you to check that you are post op stable, and reactive. As she does not respond too well anesthetic, she might be there....
Some guy sitting across from me also has his laptop out. But he's busy doing a quote for some building work at a school. Poor bastard can't stop working, even in a hospital. Sad that..
Why is it that all hospitals have those vinyl floors, and even up the walls to about hip height? And have you noticed how after many years of being walked on , the "lines" showing how the glue was spread shows through. It makes a pattern on the vinal surface.
And why is it that those dreadful hospital gown things all seem to be made to fit overweight midgets at best? Is it a case of saving material, or just plain stupidity? And why do people talk in loud whispers? Why bother. And then slam all the doors they go through!
Aha, here comes a guy carrying a baby carrier. New, proud dad coming to take his offspring home! "Congrats buddy" sez I. Thanx he says, with a big toothy grin. Probably his first one, as everything he's carrying looks brand new.
The nursing staff seem quite nice. Haven't offered me a cup of tea or anything, but they friendly, and so far, efficient.
10.15.... and waiting. I'm sitting in her room now, letting the laptop charge a bit. Doing crossword puzzles in the newspaper.
11.55.... Here she comes. My my, the Princess is awake, and looking very good. She says she feels ok, but is very pale. Says she's not in pain, but that's the drugs. Wait till they start to wear off. But at least, for now, she's doing ok.
I'm off to the coffee shop again. Need a cigarette, and more coffee, and she's in no mood to chat so I'll leave her to nap and go back in in half an hour or so.
Damn I am glad she's looking ok!!! Sent off SMS's to queen, Gman, LuckyL (my younger son), my mom and sister in law. The rest can wait, or they can phone me.
More later.....

It's that time.......
SO this is my last working day for the next 10 days. Tomorrow the Princess goes in for her op, and I will be there waiting......
Then she comes home about Sunday, and I got the next week to pamper and care for her.
It's gonna be a long week.
However, the kids won't be there, as they are off to Sun City from Monday to Friday with the queen. http://www.suninternational.com/resorts/suncity/
We were all going until Princess got ill.
It's a great place for a break. So much to do. The kids have a blast!!
So, I'm out of here for now. Will be checking emails every now and then, and blogging too, no doubt.
Have a good one all

I love you, Princess........
We are so helpless! As men, we are really a helpless species.
The Princess has to have a major operation this week. Three weeks ago she went for her annual gynie checkup, and the doctor found some serious growths in her woman parts. As a result she has to have a hysterectomy! However, she couldn't have it done the same week because her boss was just leaving on a business trip overseas, and so she delayed it till he gets back. That's this week Wednesday, and she's booked to have the op on Thursday.
Now I can appreciate that it's a serious situation, more so because until the op is done we won't know the status of the growths (malignant v. benign), but I didn't think she was in any form of discomfort. This morning I could see she wasn't looking too happy, and asked her what was wrong. Shame, she burst into tears, and said that she was / is in pain. And not a word till today?!? Damn, and I didn't pick it up. She's still been doing the usual stuff around the house, cooking, washing up, clothes washing and such. And all this time not a word. In fact I am a bit annoyed, because had I known I would of made a bit more of an effort to help. Typical, I hear you say, I should be helping anyway. Yea, but that's for another discussion.
Anyway, I hope the op goes well. She's been told that the recuperation period is 6 weeks. Damn, that's a long time. But she needs to ensure that the heals well, and gets all the rest she needs. It's going to be a testing time for the rest of us, but I'm sure we'll cope.
Strangely enough, this past Sunday morning I surprised her with breakfast in bed. First time in years, croisants, 2 types of cream cheeses, strawberry juice.....She was chuffed!! Glad I did it now. But, we are helpless as men. We don't pick up the signals, we carry on like things are fine. We don't "read" the situation.
Damn we're stupid when it comes to these things. So, God willing she will have a successful operation, and recover to her full self.
